Tile flooring
Solid prep. Straight lines. Clean edges.
Tile lasts when the assembly below it is right. We look at movement, flatness, underlayment, layout, and transitions before setting begins.
Where it fits
Choose for the job, not the sample board.
- Entries and mudrooms
- Bathrooms and laundry rooms
- Kitchens needing a hard, cleanable surface
The installation plan
- 01
Check the structure
Subfloor stiffness, seams, cracks, movement, and flatness come before tile selection.
- 02
Lay out the room
We establish focal lines, cuts, grout joints, thresholds, and finished height.
- 03
Prepare the assembly
The specified underlayment, membrane, or repair is completed before tile is set.
- 04
Set, grout, and cure
The crew protects the work and explains when the floor can take traffic.
Compare before choosing
The category gets you close. The exact product decides the fit.
- Specification
- Compare tile type, size, finish, slip considerations, grout joint, trim pieces, substrate requirements, and movement joints.
- Installation
- Methods in this category include mortar-set. The selected product instructions and conditions in the home determine the method.
- Tradeoff
- A rigid finish needs a suitable base. Deflection, cracks, abrupt height changes, and weak panels must be resolved in the assembly plan.
- Price planning
- This category can appear across mid, premium planning tiers. Pro Build prices the selected product and measured scope instead of publishing an unsupported per-square-foot teaser.
After the crew leaves
Use the floor with a clear handoff.
- Tile is not ready for immediate traffic; setting and grout materials need cure time.
- Large tile usually requires a flatter substrate than small tile.
- Grout color, joint width, edge profiles, and transitions are chosen before installation.
Straight answers
Tile questions, answered.
Can tile go directly over plywood?
A complete tile assembly must meet product and industry requirements. The needed underlayment or membrane depends on the structure and tile.
How long until I can walk on new tile?
The mortar and grout instructions control timing. The crew will block the area and give you the specific traffic time for the installed system.
Can you tile over old tile?
Sometimes, but only when the existing tile and substrate are sound, well-bonded, flat, and compatible with the planned assembly.
Will the finished floor be higher?
Often. Tile, mortar, and underlayment add height. Door clearance and transitions to adjacent flooring are part of the estimate.
Does grout need sealing?
That depends on the grout product. We provide the care requirements for the selected material.
Why does floor preparation matter so much for tile?
Tile is rigid. Movement, weak panels, cracks, and abrupt high or low spots can affect the finished assembly. The required preparation is set after the existing floor and structure are reviewed.
